The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is looking for a seasoned, entrepreneurial individual to lead the organization’s vision for research programs on spending and budget. These issues are driving the current policy debate and will have significant implications for the US economy and the well-being of its citizens. Do you want to have a direct impact on America’s future? We are looking for someone to lead our strategy on topics such as the federal budget, mandatory spending programs, tax reform, economic growth, and economic mobility to ensure our work has the greatest impact. The Director will manage the scholars and staff, conduct research, and provide guidance and mentoring to other team members, enabling Mercatus to achieve our strategic goals and to advance our mission.

Primary Responsibilities:
-Guide the research programs focused on federal budget, mandatory spending programs, tax reform, economic growth, and economic mobility. This responsibility includes the selection and commissioning of research papers to be written by non-Mercatus scholars, guidance on research projects chosen by Mercatus scholars, and managing the quality of research products.
-Work with the VP for Policy Research on the development of strategic plans.
-Supervise the work of Mercatus scholars, the program manager, and the team that reports to the program.
-Publish research findings to a wide range of audiences to maximize impact of the findings
-Work with the VP for Policy Research, the Executive Director, and the Human Resources Director for Mercatus on hiring, engaging, and retaining dedicated employees.

Minimum Requirements:
-Terminal academic degree, which should be a subject matter doctorate or JD
-Demonstrated understanding of free market principles and familiarity with the Mercatus “tool kit”
-Be a widely recognized expert and scholarly authority within the Washington policy circles, but preferably nationally recognized in a policy subject contained in the policy program
-Knowledge about the policy making process at the federal and state levels
-Alignment with the Mercatus mission and the orientation toward thinking about market solutions to public policy problems
-Significant leadership and management experience
-Expertise of the federal tax policy and budget processes
