The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) seeks a Managing Director of Communications & Marketing to lead and grow its revitalized Communications & Marketing Department.
IHS supports a growing community of university scholars across the country in advancing a better understanding of the principles of classic liberal ideas-including a free and open society, free speech and open inquiry-and helping them to flourish on college campuses. We've been supporting 'intellectual emancipators' for almost 60 years, strengthening their research through fellowship and scholarship, helping them secure strong academic careers, and providing the programming and outlets necessary to turn robust dialogue into active social change.
As the head of the Communications & Marketing Department at IHS, the position of Managing Director of Communications & Marketing calls for both top-level experience and an entrepreneurial spirit; it requires confident and proven leadership, big picture branding, and industry skills just as much as it requires an eye for details, a love of innovation, and an adaptable sense of adventure.

The Managing Director of Communications & Marketing will have hands on all of those areas, weaving the contributive threads from each department into a masterful design that becomes our unmistakable brand.
Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the ideal candidate for this position will have a full-spectrum knowledge of marketing and communications, be digitally-minded and data-driven, and provide the substance, leadership, direction, and accountability required of the role.
-Lead a newly-formed 15+ person team of highly professional, client-focused, creative, nimble, and data-driven minds. with confidence, positivity, and invested interest.
-Manage the development, refinement, and implementation of a corporate communications strategy, guidelines and procedures to ensure consistent branding and messaging.
-Design and implement a full marketing and communication campaign strategy to key target audiences, including university scholars, members, partners, and essential stakeholders, as well as the teams responsible for creating it.
-Liaise with senior directors, especially the Senior Director of Communications and the Senior Director of Marketing and Program Support, to ensure a strategic and holistic message that resonates across our various platforms, departments, and audiences.
The ideal candidate will:
-Demonstrate a record of success working developing and leading dynamic, marketing and communication campaigns.
-Possess a strong core of media relations, issues management skills, donor development experience, and social media.
-Generously collaborate with the department directors, creative team leads, and development.
-Possess excellent writing, editing, and public speaking skills.
-Speak data and analytics as a second language, using relevant analysis and metrics to inform every campaign.
-Thrive under pressure, exhibiting flexibility and diplomacy with a keen attention to deadlines and strong organizational skills.
-Be proficient in proposal and budget development.
Position Requirements and Preferences
-Minimum of 10 years' experience in nonprofit, academic, or corporate communications
-7+ years of direct senior-level experience with 3-5 years in a significant leadership role
-Degree in marketing, communications, business, English. Graduate degree preferred.
-Professional work experience in communications/public relations/journalism/marketing commensurate with the role.
-Experience in higher education preferred
-Scrum knowledge a plus
