The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) seeks a Senior Director of Communications to support a growing community of university scholars across the country in advancing a better understanding of the principles of classical liberalism--including a free and open society, free speech and open inquiry--and helping them to flourish on college campuses.

The Senior Director of Communications uses the collective strength of our creative teams to 'talk the walk,' demonstrating the value of our organization across our varied, yet specific, audiences using our favorite action verbs: reach, resonate, engage, inspire, promote, challenge, grow.
From this position, you'll develop a content and messaging strategy that will echo through each of your departments: social media, graphic design, online programs, video, and website. By clearly articulating and supporting the objectives and targets to our internal teams, you will demonstrate our value to our key external audiences, from the promising academic talent who can benefit from our programming and career support to the prestigious foundations that can best support our vision.
Reporting to the Managing Director of Marketing and Communications, the Senior Director will lead the cultural evolution of the organization, helping both internal teams and external audiences understand our organizational strategy and encouraging deeper connection and involvement.
As the most senior position within the Communications Department, you will use your creative mind, your impressive experience and example, and the best of the available talent in your department to translate words into positive and powerful action.
-Build an innovative, entrepreneurial marketing team of highly professional, client-focused, creative, nimble, and data-driven minds.
-Strategically partner with the Senior Director of Marketing and Program Support to ensure a holistic message that resonates across our various platforms.
-Identify, fortify, and magnify relationships with the media.
-Manage the development, refinement, and implementation of corporate communications strategy, guidelines and procedures to ensure consistent branding and messaging.
-Establish clear lines of communication and collaborative partnership with the department directors, creative team leads, and the Content Strategist.
The ideal candidate will:
-Demonstrate a record of success working with project and subject matter experts to developing and leading dynamic, marketing and communication campaigns.
-Possess a strong core of media relations, issues management skills, donor development experience, and a positive attitude.
-Smoothly implement new initiatives with a focus on strategy and innovation.
-Have experience in creating successful, cohesive, forward-facing communications and marketing strategies.
-Possess excellent writing, editing, and public speaking skills.
-Thrive under pressure, with a keen attention to deadlines and strong organizational skills.
-Be deeply familiar with communications across multiple channels and platforms and speak best practices as a second language.
-Be proficient in proposal and budget development.
Position Requirements and Preferences
-Minimum of 10 years' experience in nonprofit, academic, or corporate communications
-7+ years of direct senior-level experience in a significant leadership role
-Professional work experience in communications/public relations/journalism/content strategy commensurate with the role
-Experience in higher education a plus, but not required
-Relevant degree in communications, business, English, etc. Undergraduate degree required, graduate degree in relevant field preferred
